Top Ten: Christian Bird
1. Mark Norman - Overkill
Mark Norman - not an individual but the pairing of Dutch production maestros Mark de Jong and Norman Lenden. This track was first released as a b-side late in 2001 and was popularized on the scene throughout 2002 by names such as Tiesto, Marco V and Armin Van Buuren.
Still played regularly even now - this track refuses to be removed from playlists. The consistent performer rather than a two month hype before something else comes along. And this is my number one purely for these reasons - I can't really describe what I like about it but I know I have played it far more than any other tune over the last two years.
2. Prodigy - Full Throttle
Also required - a fat HIFI with volume max. Track 4 on Music for the Jilted Generation (or "the one before Voodoo People"). The title is probably the best way to describe this (don't play in your car when driving on a road with speed cameras). It lies somewhere in dance music but I would imagine impossible to dance to. Very stop and start with immense kick-ins. Another track I just seem to find my self playing a lot, probably because its so different to anything else I've ever heard. A classic prodigy sound.
3. Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar
The song that brought me to the world of clubs, Trance and going to bed when its light again so that a night out became more than just "on the pull". Released originally about 92/93 but became big with the "Three n One mix" when trance started going mainstream in 98. Managed not to go as far as the likes of ATB so maintained its credibility in the underground and is regarded as maybe the greatest ever trance anthem. still being remixed now by the likes of John '00 Flemming and Marco V and a definite at every club classics night.
A nice beaty build up to a big breakdown out of which grows the main melody, with conjures up images of the scenes on the Balearic Island which inspired the track.
4. Da Hool - Meet Her at the Love Parade
Continuing the theme of songs like no other is another revolution on the club scene. Somewhere between trance and Techno with its rolling repetitive siren like sound, and based on a very simple base line with light drums above. Became big in 97 with the Nalin and Kane mix and since has been brought back with numerous popular versions by the likes of Fergie and Pete Heller. Like Cafe Del Mar, regarded as one of the best and a must in a classics night.
5. Faithless - Salva Mea
My first memory of this song is of being really spooked by it when waking up one morning (with my radio on all night) and coming out of dreamland. Their first single from their first ablum, Reverence, released in 95. It features vocals by Dido (sister of Faithless's Rollo); and her fee for her vocal tones - a curry!
6. Madona - Justify my Love
As featured in Mr Mabbot's top ten also. Released in 1990, a song best described as erotic passion. The original video was banned for causing to many hardons at inappropriate times of the day.
7. Blackstreet - No Diggity
Blackstreet's first single, and features Dre and Queen Penn. Bit of a one hit wonder as later singles were no where near as successful as this. Nearly had the opportunity to see them live at Wemberly arena but it was a school night :-( (back in about 96). Was informed the next day by mates that went that they performed this track over a jungle backing! Later jungle miester Aphrodite went on to produce a sweet formal remix.
8. Jimi Hendrix - Redhouse (Live)
Basically just Jimi free-sytling for about 10 minutes with just a regular drum beat and a nice bass line for backing. Live here being jimis gig at the Isle of White not long before he died. Though clearly not quite with it then, he was still able to maintain his genious guitar ear and gift that no other has been able to aquire. As quoted in White men can't jump, you don't listen but you need to "feel Jimi".
9. LTJ Bukem - Atlantis
"Reprazentin tha Drum n Bass scene". Biggining and ending with a nice electronic melody that anyone can appreciate even if not liking drum n bass. The main section of this track is the classic atmospheric and jazzy drum n bass sound pioneered by the legend producer and DJ that is LTJ Bukem.
10. Snoop Dogg - Gin & Juice
A classic partee tune. Typical Snoop/Dre/West-side/Gangster-rap track with cliche lyrics of smoking weed, bitches getting it on - but not liking dem ho's, smoking (of the shooting style) anyone who disses and "sipping on Gin and Juice". But pure comedy - the video especially.
